Moving Forward Together
Week One: The Church Is People, Not a Place
Church, we’re growing together and making the move to a larger building at World Vision in Monrovia at the end of September. In our blog posts over the next four weeks, we'll reflect on what God's Word teaches about unity, service, and moving forward together as one church family during this exciting new season. Let’s pray and keep our eyes on Jesus! God has good things in store.
Series Theme Verse
Ephesians 4:1–3 "I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
Change has a way of revealing our hearts. It often stretches our patience, challenges our preferences, and gives us opportunities to practice humility. That is why this is such an important time to remember a foundational biblical truth:
The church has never been about a building.
1 Peter 2:4–5 "Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."
Peter's imagery is beautiful. He doesn't describe the church as bricks, concrete, or walls. Instead, he calls believers living stones. God is building something far greater than a physical structure. He is building a redeemed people, joined together through Christ for His glory.
Throughout history, God's people have gathered in homes, synagogues, open fields, rented facilities, schools, and church buildings. No matter the building, the mission has never changed.
Wherever believers gather to worship Christ, proclaim His Word, love one another, and make disciples, the church is present and lives are changed.
Paul echoes this same truth when he writes:
"...being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit." Ephesians 2:21–22
What an amazing picture! God is not merely gathering individuals. He is fitting us together into one body. Each believer has a place. Each believer matters. Each believer contributes to the work God is accomplishing through His church.
Our new meeting place will be a tremendous gift and a valuable tool for ministry, but it is still only a tool. The true beauty of the church has never been found in its address. It is found in a people who love Christ, love one another, and faithfully proclaim the gospel.
As we prepare for this move, let's keep our perspective anchored in God’s Word. We are not simply relocating. We are continuing the mission God has entrusted to us. Every box packed, every chair moved, every room prepared, and every volunteer who serves, is an opportunity to demonstrate the unity Christ has already established within His body.
In every church family, there will naturally be different opinions, ideas, and preferences. Some will miss the familiarity of our current space. Others will immediately embrace the opportunities that come with the new one. Those differences are not the issue. The question is how will we respond to one another. Scripture consistently calls us to humility, patience, gentleness, and love. Our greatest priority is never proving ourselves right; it is preserving the unity that Christ purchased with His own blood.
Acts 20:28 "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood."
As we move forward together, let us thank God for His faithful provision. Let us hold buildings with open hands. Jesus made it clear that people around us would know that we belong to Him by our love not our building.
May every person who walks into our new meeting place discover something far more beautiful than a larger facility. May they encounter a church family marked by humility, unity, genuine love, and an unwavering commitment to Jesus Christ.
This Week's Challenge
This week, as you pray for our upcoming move, don't pray only for the logistics. Pray for the people. Ask the Lord to prepare every heart for this new season. Pray that He would strengthen our unity, deepen our love for one another, and help each of us faithfully fulfill the role He has given us within the body of Christ. May our unity become a testimony to the watching world, and may our new meeting place become another place where the gospel is faithfully proclaimed.
