Ministering in Jesus’ Name
Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
In Romans 12, God (through Paul) is urging us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices. Jesus died for us! He wants us to lay down our life to take up His.
In Matthew 25, Jesus tells His followers that whatever they did for the least of these, they did for Him. The hungry person, the stranger, the one who is sick or alone. Jesus said that when you serve them, you are serving Him.
That means every time we lay down our time, our comfort, or our plans, Crosspoint, we aren't just helping people. We're ministering to Jesus Himself.
Why a living sacrifice?
Old Testament sacrifices ended at the altar. Ours sacrifice doesn't.
A living sacrifice keeps climbing back on an altar, day after day, in small and ordinary moments: the phone call you'd rather skip, the seat you give up, the person you choose to notice. When you do the things God is leading you to do, that would be easier to skip, you are choosing to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Paul calls this our reasonable service or our spiritual act of worship. Worship isn't only what happens on Sunday morning during the singing. It's what happens when we hand someone a meal, listen to a hurting neighbor, or serve in the nursery when we'd rather sit down.
Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The world teaches us to ask, "What's in it for me?” Jesus renews our minds to ask, "Who is He putting in front of me?"
The more we see Christ in the faces of those we serve, the more our hearts change. Serving stops being a duty and becomes a delight.
Crosspoint, this week, ask yourself:
Who is the "least of these" God has placed in my path?
If I knew I was serving Jesus Himself, how would I show up?
Let’s lay it all down this week, for the One Who laid down His very life for us. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. He left us here to be light in the darkness — showing people Him.
