Following God
As I mentioned in a recent Sunday message, there’s a difference between asking God to bless our plans and surrendering to His leading.
So often, we want clarity before obedience. We want the full picture before we take the first step. But Scripture shows us a different way — the way of faith.
When God called Abraham, He didn’t hand him a detailed roadmap. He gave him a promise and a direction:
“Go from your country… to the land that I will show you.” Genesis 12:1
And Abraham went.
Not because he understood everything — but because he trusted the One who called him.
That’s the heart of following God by faith.
Hebrews reminds us:
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.” Hebrews 11:8
Faith is not about having all the answers. It’s about trusting God enough to take the next step He has given us to make.
We love the idea of God leading — until His leading requires surrender. But Jesus never called us to partial obedience. He said:
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” John 10:27
Notice that — they follow. Not analyze, not hesitate, not negotiate. They follow.
Following means yielding our timeline, our preferences, and even our understanding. It means trusting that His way is better, even when it feels uncertain.
Proverbs speaks directly to this tension:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5–6
God doesn’t promise to explain everything — He promises to lead faithfully. And often, His guidance comes one step at a time:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105
A lamp doesn’t illuminate the whole journey — just the next step. And that’s where faith is formed. Following God by faith means choosing obedience when it’s hard to wait. It means stepping out when comfort calls you to stay. It means believing that the One who leads you is both good and trustworthy.
Because He is.
And the same God who called Abraham, who led Israel through the wilderness, and who sent His Son to make a way for us — He is still leading today.
Here is the question we need to ask ourselves. Are we willing to follow?
