Ascending the Hill of the Lord

Preparing Our Hearts for Sunday

McKenzie and I have been in awe of what we have been able to see so far, on our trip to Israel. The City of David, the pools of Bethesda, Mount of Olives, Gethsemane, and so much more.

One of the highlights has certainly been our walk along the ancient road that led to the southwest corner of the Temple Mount. Deep underground, the road has been covered for centuries. Recently, a large portion of the “Pilgrim Road” has been excavated and opened to the public (from the city of David into the Old City of Jerusalem).

It is widely understood to be one of the roads Jewish pilgrims used as they made their way to worship during the great feasts. This would be the road Mary and Joseph traveled with Jesus when He was just a boy and that Jesus and His disciples traveled several times.

We saw spots along the way where it is quite likely that Jesus stood and preached to the pilgrims on their journey into or out of Jerusalem.

As McKenzie and I walked, and ascended the steps of this ancient path, we couldn’t help but think of Psalm 24 - one of so many songs from the book of Psalms that would have filled the air two thousand years ago.

Psalm 24:3–4 “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart…”

The travelers prepared themselves spiritually before entering the courts. They examined their lives. They remembered they were approaching a holy God.

Just as worshipers prepared their hearts on the road to the Temple, we should prepare ourselves before gathering as the body of Christ.

Clean hands — how we live.

Pure hearts — why we live.

And open gates — welcoming the King of Glory among us.

Church family, as we approach this Sunday, let’s not simply attend — let’s allow God to lift our spirits. Let’s confess what needs cleansing, lay aside distraction, and come expectant. The King of Glory still meets His people.

Psalms 24:3-6 “Who may climb the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? Only those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and never tell lies. They will receive the Lord’s blessing and have a right relationship with God their savior. Such people may seek you and worship in your presence, O God of Jacob. Interlude”
