Wisdom Journey – Week 6
Diligence vs Laziness
Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. Proverbs 6:6–8
God values diligence because it reflects His own character. Throughout Scripture, we see that work is not a punishment but a gift given before sin entered the world. Our daily responsibilities—whether at home, at work, in ministry, or in caring for our families—are opportunities to honor the Lord.
In Proverbs 6, Solomon points us to one of God's smallest creatures as a powerful teacher. The ant has no supervisor standing over it, yet it faithfully works, prepares, and plans ahead. It doesn't wait until the last minute or depend on someone else to do its work.
In contrast, Solomon warns about the danger of laziness: "A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep" (Proverbs 6:10). The warning isn't against rest—God designed us to rest. The warning is against a pattern of procrastination and neglect. Small compromises in our discipline can slowly lead to spiritual, relational, and even financial poverty.
The New Testament echoes this same principle.
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. Colossians 3:23
Our work becomes an act of worship when it is done with the right heart.
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. Ecclesiastes 9:10
God calls His people to serve faithfully with excellence, whether anyone notices or not.
Diligence also applies to our spiritual lives. We are called to pursue Christ intentionally, to spend time in His Word, to pray, and to grow in obedience. Hebrews 6:11–12 urges believers to show diligence in their faith and not become sluggish, but to imitate those who inherit God's promises through faith and patience.
Diligence is often built through ordinary, consistent obedience. The little choices we make each day like: opening God's Word, serving others, working with integrity, and doing right when no one is watching—shape who we become.
This week, ask the Lord to reveal any areas where laziness or complacency has settled in. Then, by His grace, choose diligence.
