Serving Jesus: A Non-Negotiable
There’s a subtle lie many Christians believe. It’s that following Jesus is mostly about believing the right things.
The Bible paints a very different picture.
Following Jesus is not passive—it’s active. It’s lived out, and it’s often expressed in service for God to others. Jesus didn’t just save us from something. He saved us and made something new.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
Good works aren’t optional add-ons to the Christian life—they are part of the design.
And Jesus, Himself, made it clear.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
If we follow Jesus, we follow a Servant King.
He has called us to follow in His steps.
“For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:” I Peter 2:21
Here’s Why Serving Matters (More Than You Think)
Serving isn’t just about filling a need at church. God uses it to shape us. And interestingly, even the scientific world is catching up to what Scripture has said all along.
Research shows that serving others (volunteering):
- Reduces depression and anxiety
- Increases sense of purpose and life satisfaction
- Is associated with longer life expectancy (Mayo Clinic Health System)
Why? We were wired for this.
Serving pulls us out of self-centered living and into purpose, connection, and joy. It gives meaning and builds relationships. It actually strengthens both mental and physical health.
Science is simply confirming what God designed from the beginning. You come alive when you give your life away.
Next week, we’ll continue this thought, but for now remember:
- We need to serve from the overflow— like we talked about in Bible study a few weeks ago: We must stay rooted in the Word and prayer and in fellowship with other believers.
- We don’t serve to earn God’s love. We serve because we already have it.

Single Ladies, join us for the second gathering in our new series, Secure in Christ. We’ll be exploring the topic of comparison and envy, and how to find true security in Christ through every season.
A light breakfast and refreshments will be provided, so come ready to be refreshed and watered by the Word of God.
