How’s Your Love?♥️

There’s a quiet but powerful moment at the end of the Gospel of John where Jesus meets Peter on the shore of Galilee after the resurrection.

“So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.” John 21:15-17

Three times, Jesus asks Peter the same question: “Do you love Me?” And three times, Peter responds, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”

It’s hard to miss what’s happening here. Not long before this, Peter had denied Jesus three times. Now, Jesus meets him in grace, not to shame him, but to restore him.

Each question is intentional.

Each response matters.

And each time Peter answers, Jesus follows it with a calling: “Feed My lambs.” “Tend My sheep.” “Feed My sheep.”

Love comes first.

Then comes the work.

A couple of Wednesdays ago, we talked about serving God from the overflow—that our service isn’t meant to come from emptiness, obligation, or striving, but from a heart that is filled because of our time with Him.

Jesus doesn’t begin by giving Peter a task. He begins by asking about his love. The health and effectiveness of our service is directly tied to our love for Christ.

On Wednesday, we talked about leadership in God’s work. Biblical leadership doesn’t start with gifting, charisma, or even experience.

It all flows from one place: “Do you love Me?”

The question that Jesus asked Peter still matters for us today.

Before we step into serving, before we lead, before we pour into others—Jesus invites us to examine our hearts. When our love for Christ is real and growing, everything else—our service, our leadership, our care for others—flows from that place.

It’s not forced.

It’s not empty.

It’s joyful!
