A Sovereign God in Uncertain Times
Last week we reflected on the peace that Christ gives His people. This week it’s helpful to remember why we can live with that peace: our God reigns.
When the world feels chaotic, Scripture consistently brings us back to this foundational truth—God is sovereign. He is not surprised by events, overwhelmed by circumstances, or reacting haphazardly as world events unfold. He rules over it.
Humanity is unpredictable, but God’s sovereignty means that His authority extends over all creation. He will only allow so much, for so long.
For millennia, nations have risen and fallen. History is filled with events that have unfolded in ways no human could plan or expect. Although the future can feel uncertain to us, one thing is for sure:
Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
The prophet Daniel proclaimed a similar truth while living in the uncertainty of exile:
Daniel 2:20-21 Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.”
Daniel declared these words while living far from home in a foreign empire. Even there, he recognized that God was still directing history. The same is true today. Though the world may feel unsettled, the Lord has not stepped away from His throne.
God’s sovereignty does not mean we understand everything He is doing, but it does mean we can trust Him completely. Scripture assures us:
Psalm 33:11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations.
Because of this, the church does not need to live in fear or anxiety about the future. Our calling is to remain faithful—to pray, to love others well, to proclaim the gospel, and to trust that the God who rules over history is still accomplishing His purposes.
So as we look at the days ahead, let’s remember: the headlines may change, but the throne of heaven does not.
