A Fast That Draws Us Back to God
As we continue this season of fasting together, Scripture reminds us that fasting is not meant to be a routine we complete but a posture of the heart that draws us back to the Lord. It’s so easy to get used to the fast as hunger pains subside or we are no longer frantically doom scrolling.
Let’s keep this time purposeful and fresh!
Biblical fasting should continually create space for humility, repentance, and renewed dependence on God.
The Lord speaks clearly through the prophet Joel:
Joel 2:12–13 “Now, therefore,” says the Lord, “turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning. So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness.”
God is not after outward displays or religious effort. He desires surrendered hearts. Like we mentioned last week, the fasting that pleases Him moves beyond what we give up and shapes who we become.
As Isaiah 58 teaches, a fast that honors God does not end with us feeling good about ourselves personally. Instead, it produces lives marked by compassion, obedience to God, and care for others.
The right kind of fasting softens our hearts before the Lord and aligns our lives with His purposes.
As we fast, may our prayers extend beyond our own needs. May it fight for freedom, healing, and restoration—in our families, our church, and our community.
Church family, may this be a holy season of returning to the Lord with fresh devotion.

We are kicking off the year by connecting with our Lord and Savior in a powerful way - demonstrating (and being reminded of) our dependence on Him through prayer and fasting.
